So I think I figured it out...

Wed Jun 3, 2009, 8:50 PM
  • Mood: Amazed
  • Listening to: my mother playing Bejeweled Blitz
  • Watching: Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan
  • Playing: Age of Empires III
  • Drinking: water
Now I know why no one carves out every meticulous detail on their keyblades: because it takes a really damn long time. ESPECIALLY if your Dremel is battery powered and needs constant charging (like mine). However, I WILL finish this damn keyblade and paint it with AUTO PAINT, just as planned...

Even if it takes me all goddamn summer, I will make this the most epically gorgeous keyblade that my tools and abilities allow me to make

I am going to have to take a temporary break to make my friend a knife though. This will be nice because it will be a LOT easier compared to this keyblade of impending doom =_=. There is no fancy beveling, no strange curves or anything...

its like paradise =D

hey what wood do you recomend for carving and what thickness for keyblades?

I don't remember the exact thickness of the wood I used, but something around 3/4in should work nicely. The wood I used for my oblivion keyblade is pine which has it's advantages and disadvantages. Being a soft wood, it is relatively light and easy to cut, but that being said, it is very easy too cut too much when you are carving in details. I never worked with hard wood on something as large as a keyblade, but it is more forgiving if you don't have extremely steady hands when carving. So, if you want something light, I would suggest pine. If you want something that has the potential for a lot of detailed carving, I would go with a hard wood.

Ah this is really helpful! I didn't know you could get pine wide enough for keyblades (I see small planks everywhere) for a bit I've been using plywood but its been an absolute nightmare. Are there any dremel tips you suggest other than sanding barrel?

Yeah, the pine I use is technically "Mastercraft Edge-Glued Pine Board" with 5/8"-3/4"-18"-48" dimensions

Dremel bits hmmm. I mainly use 4 of them. The first two are just a thin and wide grinding stone for sanding.

This bit is good for engraving in details and corners

I can't find the link to the exact bit that I use, but this one is close enough. I use this for cutting out very small details that I can't get with my jigsaw

Another Dremel product I recommend is a Dremel Multi-Max. They are excellent at shaving off excess amounts of wood and sanding. Not sure if you want to invest in one, since they are about $100, but if you have that kind of money to spend I highly recommend them

Play for me, Minstrel, my love,
play a harp, her neck is of gold,
in a dance, which covers my soul,
I'll become the mirror of my thoughts...
